Cardinal Spellman High School Welcomes Eighth Graders
To Visit

Spellman welcomes students who are seeking strong academics, who hope to grow in faith, and who look forward to many leadership opportunities.  As a part of the admissions process eighth grade students are invited to spend a morning at Cardinal Spellman.  They visit classes, talk with Spellman students and join us for lunch.
These mornings are called (CS)3 days:
Come See, Cardinal Spellman, Catch our Spirit.
They aer wonderful leadership opportunities for Spellman students and fun learning experiences for eighth graders.  For the Class of 2015 every student who registers for the placement test or sends an application will receive a personal invitation to visit.  These invitations are mailed before Christmas.

What do 8th graders say about (CS) 3 sessions?

After most (CS)3 sessions, students are given a brief evaluation form.

In the opinion of the eighth graders, the best part of the day varied from lunch to specific classes such as theatre arts, science, computer, Spanish, English, history or gym. Classes were called "creative, interesting, fun, exciting, informative, information packed, and (for one student) boring!"

As for the CSHS group leaders, eighth graders described them as "great, helpful, nice, friendly, welcoming, the best, real cool and answered all our questions!"  Every comment was positive.

Criteria for Acceptance to Cardinal Spellman High School’s Freshman Class

Taking the High School Placement test alone does not constitute an application to Spellman.  Each student must have a completed file i.e. application, transcript of grade 7 & 8 and teacher recommendations, and the scores from the Placement Test. (Admission Kits are available upon request each year beginning in September)

Each student’s file is studied carefully giving consideration to his/her essay on why he/she wants to come to Spellman, student grades in school, attendance, promptness, and teacher recommendations.  Testing results from a student's current school as well as the Placement Test results are studied.

Since Spellman is a college preparatory secondary school, the Admissions Committee considers whether a student is able and interested in pursuing this level of education! This is a primary concern.

Acceptances vary as follows:

Some students are accepted

  • as Spellman Scholars and are awarded some scholarship money, or
  • to the Honors at Entrance Program or
  • to Spellman’s college preparatory program.

Other students are accepted but

  • A meeting is requested with the parents and student (Concern about school grades and/or testing results). In these cases the meeting may be informational only, or there may be specific recommendations made as a condition for acceptance. The emphasis in these cases is to strengthen or build skills to assist the young man or woman to move forward with success.
  • In some instances a parent/student meeting is requested before any acceptance. In this case, the admissions committee has some concerns, but is open to receiving additional information. Usually, the final decision is a mutual one.
  • Unfortunately, there are some students for whom Spellman’s Program of Studies does not seem to be a possibility. Those are often hard decisions!

Dates for Registration For the Class of 2015
The dates for registration for Spellman’s Class of 2015 will be
Sunday, February 13, 2011 from 1:30 - 3:00, and
Tuesday, February 15, 2011 from  6:30 - 8:00,
If a snow day is needed registration will be held on
Thursday, February 17, 2011 from 6:30 - 8:00.

We traditionally have a wonderful group of families who choose Spellman. People are positive and enthusiastic. Some, of course, are a bit nervous. Their oldest child is about to begin high school, or maybe the youngest! It can be a time of mixed feelings!

The Admissions Committee always hopes its decisions are the best for the student as well as Spellman!
