A Message from the Principal

Hopefully the season of spring will grace New England early this year! <= /span>

As we begin the month of March we look forward to the student production of Les Miserables on March 5, 5and 7^th. I am sure this production will continue our outstanding reputation for high school productions par excellence. I hope you will have an opportunit= y to come to one of the performances. I am sure it will be truly family entertainment.

We also celebrate the feast of St= . Joseph on March 19^th. We remember in a very special way the Sisters of St. Joseph who have been instrumental in creating and continuing the Spellman spirit that permeates = our students and staff. We are so grateful to the gifts that each one of them has contributed and continues to contribute to our Spellman heritage. Thank you and God bless you!

When Bishop Dooher celebrated our Catholic Schools W= eek Liturgy, he granted the student body a day off. We have decided to take this day on March 19^th, the feast of St. Joseph, in recognition of the heritage the Sisters of St. Joseph have lgiven to us at Spellman.

And if you can believe Interim reports will be distributed to students on March= 3^rd. Please call and speak to teachers = if you have concerns or questions regarding these grades. There is time left to improve!

Interim Report

Interim Reports for 3^rd Term will be given = to students on Wednesday, March 3^rd.

If necessary you may call school to set up an appointm= ent with your child’s teachers

or contact them by email.

Edline

By the first week of March every 9^th –= ; 11^th grade student will be able to log in to Edline = to get an up-to-date account of their progress in each of their classes. We are ho= ping that we will be able to arrange time for parents to go through this process= by the end of the month. In the meantime … parents can access Edline by going in with your child through their acco= unt.

Course Selection for 2010 - 2011

Your sons and daughters are in the process of making decisions regarding courses for the next school year. We encourage you to help them in t= his process. If you need to speak= with their guidance counselor, please do not hesitate to call (508-588-1399).

During the month of March your child will have an opportunity to consult with their guidance counselor to discuss the course = selection process and to help them build the most challenging and appropriate schedule for them.

On April 5th, your son or daughter will be bringing ho= me a form to be signed containing the courses that he/she has selected for the coming school year for your approval.

Please sign this form and have your son/daughter retur= n it to us via the homeroom teacher along with the $200.00 re-registration fee.<= /p>

Forms and fee should be returned on or before by Ap= ril 6^th.

In order to i= nsure your son/daughter's seat for the school year 2010 - 2011, it is imperative = that you return these signed forms with the re-registration fee ($200.00) promptly. If you son or daugh= ter is not returning to Spellman next year, please send a letter to us stating the school he/she will be attending.

PLEASE NOTE: =

We build the= master schedule based on the course selections made by your son/daughter and appro= ved by you and the school. Once the master schedule is designed it is very difficult to accommodate requests to change a student’s courses.

Financial Aid= Forms

Financial Aid applications must be completed each year that you are seeking financial aid.

Financial Aid forms are available in the main office a= nd students may pick them up or you may call and request that we send one to y= ou via the mail. The deadline= for filing financial aid applications is April 1st. Only applications that have been processed by May 1^st will be conside= red for the financial aid. FA= CTS Grant and Aid Assessment applications must be mailed to the address indicat= ed on the envelope with a $25.00 processing fee. Only parents who have filed a completed financial aid form with= all supporting documentation will be eligible for any aid.

Class of 2014

Students for the Class of 2014 have registered. We look forward to welcoming these= young men and women. In fact, some = will take a Math or Language placement test on March 3^rd. There will be many other opportuni= ties for these students to meet, learn more about the opportunities awaiting them and realize ways that they can be involved. All these opportunities give these students ways of getting to know some of their new classmates. We look forward to continue to wel= come them.

Transfer Students

There have been many inquiries about transferring to Spellman. The first step is t= o send a copy of the student’s latest report card. This will allow us to see if the c= ourses the student is taking are transferable and if there is room in the courses = the student needs. If the courses= are transferable and there is room in the classes, the admissions process begin= s: application, transcript and interview.

Students at Spellman are welcoming. They are happy to have others join= them.

The Challenge...

If 900 alumni/Parents/friends make a donation this year with gifts of any amount by June 30th, Cardinal Spellman will earn an additional $40k to support the Annual Fund. This challenge is the first of its kind and proportion! It is no secret that $40k would make a significant difference in closing the gap between tuition at Spellman and the actual cost of educating our students. To date we need 600 donors to make this happen.

P= arents of Seniors

Information and applications for scholarships availabl= e to Brockton residents and to other qualified students regardless of residence will be published and distributed to seniors during the month of March.

Residents of surrounding towns should contact the guid= ance office of their local publi= c high school for scholarship information and applications that are available = to residents of their town. Also= check the Scholarship Scoop which is published twice a month. The most current issue is attached = at the end of the newsletter.

No family will receive financial aid unless the required FA= FSA and Profile forms have been submitted. If you haven’= ;t done so already, please complete these forms and mail them as soon as possible.

Parents of Juniors<= /span>

As you probably know, most colleges require the SAT= I as part of their admissions criteria. All juniors should take the SAT I either May 1 or J= une 5. Some of the more compe= titive colleges also require 2 of the SAT II subject tests. Your son/daughter should consult w= ith his/her guidance counselor to see if they need to take at least one of these tests in June. Please be aware that the deadline for registering for= the May 1 SAT is March 25. If possible, it is preferable to r= egister on line at www.collegeboard.com.

College Research

The guidance counselors have been meeting individually= with sophomores and juniors to discuss their course of studies and the college admissions process.   It = is a good idea for Juniors and their parents to plan = some time during the April vacation to visit two or three colleges they might be interested in attending. It is suggested that you make an appointment for a campus tour before arriving at= the college. Visiting schedules a= re usually available on the website of each college.

College Information Night

Mark your calendars for our Annual College and Financial Aid Information Night, which will take place on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at Cardinal Spellman High Schoo= l from 7:00 to 8:30PM. This program, planned especially f= or the parents and students of the Junior Class, will feature college admissions representatives.

Additionally, the Guidance Department Book on the Coll= ege Information process will be handed out that night.

National College Fair

The National College Fair will be held on April 27 and= 28 at the Convention Center in South Boston. Representatives from over 300 coll= eges across the US will be available to answer questions and hand out materials. Although the Fair is during the mo= rning on both days, Spellman does not consider this to be an excused absence. We recommend that students and the= ir families attend the evening session on 4/27. Seniors,

This is the fifth issue of the Scholarship Scoop. You will notice that some new scholarships have been added, since the last newsletter. Several important dates are coming up. Hopefully your family has completed all of the required forms to apply for financial aid. Check the individual financial aid requirements and deadlines on the websites of the colleges where you are applying.

Now that you have received acceptances at the colleges= of your choice, make sure you can afford to attend them by applying for all applicable scholarships. If t= he scholarships require transcripts, make sure that you tell us before any deadlines.

# New Scholarship

REGULAR SCHOLARSHIPS.

1.         = Best Buy @15 Scholarship Program – 1000 - $1000 scholarships will be awarded. Students need solid grades, involv= ed in volunteer community or work experience.&nb= sp; You do not have to work there to apply. Apply on-line at www.bestbuy.com/scholarships or www.at15.com by February 15, 2010.

2.    &nb= sp;    Yawkey Scholars Program – Renewab= le scholarships up to $20,000 for tuition only. Must be a US citizen and permanent resident of Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Essex, Middlesex, Nantucket, Norfol= k, Plymouth, Suffolk, or Worcester Counties, have a strong academic record, ha= ve considerable financial need, have participated in a mentoring program or ongoing mentori= ng relationship, have faced significant challenges and obstacles, and enrollin= g in one of the list of colleges in Massachusetts. 3.         = The National Commission for Cooperative Education Scholarship – 170 scholarships, renewable scholarships of $6000 each will be awarded by the 10 partner colleges in the Commission. These colleges include Drexel University, Johnson and Wales University, Kette= ring University, Pace University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Cincin= nati, University of Toledo, and Wentworth Institute of Technology. Applications are available online at www.co-op.edu. The deadline for the scholarship i= s February 15, 2010.

4.         = Oh, the Places You’ll Go Scholarship &= #8211; sponsored by Random House. $5= 000 scholarship, applicants must be 12^th grade students graduating in spring 2010. Deadline is February 15, 2010. For more infor= mation go to www.ohtheplaces.org.

5.         = The 2010 Shell Oil Company Technical Scholarship and 2010 Shell Minority Scholarships – up to   =       20 one year awards of $2500 for graduating high school seniors enrolling in engineering or geosciences at universities identified by Shell. The list of the colleges where the scholarship can be used along with applications are available in the Guidance Office. Applications and supporting materials must be received by February 1= 6, 2010.

6.         = Westfield State College – Scien= ce Teacher Scholarship – Provides up to $1500 per year for each of f= our years who enroll as a Chemistry or General Science major and plan to teach science at the K-12 following graduation.&= nbsp; To apply students need only to fill out an application for Westfield State College and write “Chemistry” or “General Science” in the appropriate space indicating major field. The deadline for recei= pt of applications is March 1, 2010.

7.         = The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts Co= llege Scholarships – The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts offers= 11 scholarships for high school seniors. Scholarships are available for students majoring in horticulture, floriculture, landscape design, conservation, forestry agronomy, city plann= ing, environmental studies, land management, botany, biology and allied subject. The student must be a resident of Massachusetts, have minimum GPA of 3.0, good character, and financial need. Application forms are available on= the GSFM website http://www.gcfm.org or in= the Guidance Office. The deadline= is March 1, 2010.

8.         = SAMMY 2010 – Scholar Athlete Mi= lk Mustache of the Year – Offers $7500 scholarships to 25 winners throughout the country. Judgi= ng will be based on academic performance, athletic           excellence, leadership, community service, and milk experience. Applications will only be accepted online at www.bodybymilk.com until March 5, 2010.

9.    &nb= sp;    Keene State College Music Department = Four-year scholarships – for vocalists and instrumentalists with particular consideration given to performers on double reeds, strings, trombone, and h= orn. &n= bsp;      Students have to audition by March 5, 2010. #10.   = Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program - Scholarship program to recognize and reward young volunteers = who have helped make their communities a better place. Volunteer efforts must have occurr= ed in the last year. This year Kohl’s plans to recognize 2100 kids with prizes ranging from $50 Kohl’s gifts cards to a total of $10,000 in scholarships. If students would like to be nomin= ated please give your name to Mrs. DiFazio in the Guidance Office by March 1, 2010. For more infor= mation go to www.kohlskids.com.

11.       Order Sons of Italy in America Grand Lodge= of Massachusetts – Offers a minimum of 25   =          scholarships of $1000 annually. Many of the scholarships are awarded to students whose families are affiliated with Ord= er of Sons of Italy; however, one award is given to a student who is studying = art and one student who will be studying music.   Awards are based on scholast= ic         &= nbsp; ability, character, activities, and who will be attending an accredited four year college.         Application must be postmarked no later than March 15.<= /i> Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

12.       Rockland Trust Scholarship – will a= ward five $2500 scholarships. Appl= icant must be a resident of Plymouth, Barnstable or Bristol County or a resident of Cohasset, Stoughton, Randolph, Braintree= ,         &= nbsp; Weymouth, Quincy, <= st1:City w:st=3D"on">Wellesley or Watertown. Rockland Trust employees and their relatives are      = ; not eligible. Must be entering college for the f= irst time as a full time student, be in the top 50% of class. Students will be evalu= ated on academic accomplishment, community service/extracurricular activities, a= nd the required essay. Students = must use the applications available at all branch locations. Applications must be completed and returned by March 19, 2010.

#13.   = = Brockton Rotary Charitable and Educational Association – 10 scholarships of approximatel= y - $1000 each. Open to any student who is a resid= ent of Brockton who shall be a graduate of Brockton High School= , Cardinal Spellman High School or Southeastern Region= al Vocational Technical High School. The students shall be accepted at a recognized and accredited two, three, or four year school, college, or university. Awards will be ba= sed on scholarship, character, and need. Applications will be available in the Guidance Office. Deadline for filing is March 31, 2010.

#14.   = National Kidney Foundation - Offers= several awards – 1) Academic Award – in 2010 one prospective college bo= und student will be awarded a $1000 academic award. This scholarship is for a student = whose life has been directly impacted by Chronic Kidney Disease; the second is the Dottie Lourie Memorial Scholarship – in 2= 010, a $1000 scholarship will be awarded to an individual whose life has been dire= ctly impacted by Chronic Kidney Disease or a life saving organ transplant. More information and applications = are available in the Guidance Office. Deadline for the application is March 31, 2010.

#15. =     Bridgewater Youth Soccer Scholarships - First = is the Bridgewater Youth Soccer Scholarship Awards – 5 offered at $400 each, must have participated in Bridgewater Young Soccer organization; Second is Scott Walker Soccer Memorial Scholarship – 1 award, need based scholarship, and the recipient must have played soccer in Bridgewater. The application for these scholars= hips is in the Guidance Office, and they must be received by April 1, 2010.

16.       Old Colony YMCA – offers th= ree scholarships: Irma Rubenstein Higher Education Scholarship, Howard E. Metcalf-Randy Baker Y’s Men’s Scholarship, and George A. and Evelyn L. A= spacher Scholarship. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. Deadline is April 1, 2010.

#17.   = Bridgewater Garden Club – Offers two $500 scholarships to students residing in Bridgewater or Ra= ynham who are planning to major in agriculture, botany, conservation, earth scien= ce, ecology, environmental science, horticulture, forestry, landscape architect= ure, marine biology, or urban planning. Application is available in the Guidance Office and must be submitte= d by April 1, 2010.

18.&nbs= p;      Stoughton Youth Baseball Scholarship̵= 1; Students must have played in the Stoughton Little League or had been involv= ed in the Youth Baseball program. Applications are available in Guidance. De= adline to submit the application is April = 1, 2010.

#19.   = Massachusetts Broadcasters Association – Offers two scholarships one for $2000, the other for $2500. To apply for this scholarship, a s= tudent must be a Massachusetts resident, be enrolled or plan to enroll at an accredited two or four year school with a major or intention of studying ov= er the air broadcasting. The stu= dent need not attend school in Mas= sachusetts to be eligible. Additional information is on the application that is available in the Guidance Office. Completed application= s must be received by April 2, 2010.

#20.   = Henry O. Peabody Scholarship R= 11; $1000 to $5000 scholarships to enable women to be self-supporting. Applicants must be a resident of <= st1:City w:st=3D"on">Norwood, Bellingham= , Brockton, Canton, <= st1:City w:st=3D"on">Dedham, Mansfield, = Sharon, Walpole, We= stwood, Weymouth, Wrentham or any other town in Norfolk County. For graduating senior who intend to enroll full or part time in a vocational-technical school, junior or commun= ity college or a four year college or university. Financial need is an important criteria.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> Applications are available at www.sms.scholarshipa= merica.org/peabody. All applications must be submitted= by April 15, 2010.

21.       Massachusetts Restaurant Association<= /b> – Educational Foundation Scholarship – will be awarding scholar= ships up to $2000 for students attending an accredited restaurant or foodservice –related     &nbs= p; post-secondary program, must be a US citizen, have a minimum of 2.65 GPA, and 250 hours or= more of restaurant/foodservice work experience. Applications are available in the Guidance Office or online atwww.marestaurantassoc.org, and= the deadline is April 16, 2010.

22.       Brockton Garden Club Scholarship - $500 scholars= hip to a member of the class of 2010who will pursue a program in Horticulture, Floriculture, Forestry, Landscaping, Agronomy, or similar majors. The application is available in the Guidance Office. Deadline is April 18, 2010.

23.       The Fountainhead Essay contest= - - Students must choose one of three topics and write    an essay between 800 an= d 1600 words in length, and submit the essay by April 26, 2010. Go to        www.aynrandeducation.com for = more information. 521 prizes are available.

24.       The Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholar= ship Fund – offers renewable, 4-year scholarships to students with financial need who display academic excellence, a desire to make a meaningf= ul contribution to society, good character, and a strong work ethic. These awards are limited to perman= ent residents of New England. The fund awarded about $1.75 milli= on to Massachusetts re= sidents for 2009-2010 school year. The application and complete, deta= iled instructions will be posted on the website www.phillips-scholarship.org<= /a> by January 1, 2010. Postmark dea= dline for applications is May 1, 2010

From the Religious Studies and Campus Ministry Department…

The March meeting of the Parents’ Prayer Grou= p will be held on this Wednesday evening,= March 10^th at Cardinal Spellman beginning at 7 p.m. in Rm #104. We look forward = to welcoming back old members as well as any new members—parents, friend= s, mentors and teachers. Drop in= for the evening to pray with us for our students and school community. This month’s prayer will inc= lude brief reflection on Chapter 6: “Honoring Parents and Resisting Rebellion,” in The Po= wer of a Praying Parent by Stormie Omartian. “His Mi= ghty Power Rangers” is a special prayer activity being planned for Len= t by TAG and members of Campus Mi= nistry under the direction of Ms. Cathy Demers.   It amounts to students gathe= ring in order to pray together and strategize ways to use the weapons of faith to f= ight the spiritual battle particularly during Lent. All students at every grade level = are invited to participate.

A Service of Reconciliation for the students and Spellman community is being planned by members of Mercy, Inc to be held during Religion classes throughout the= day of Wednesday, March 17^th. Please feel welcome to drop in during any of the scheduled MODs.

Ministry assi= gnments for next year’s Senior Ministry courses have been made. The present groups will be pla= nning welcoming retreat experiences for the new candidates.

The school Mass for March is being held on Thursday, March 18^th beginnin= g at 9:30 a.m. in the Auditorium in recognition of Saint Joseph’s Day. Fr. Ed Riley, Pastor of Saint Joseph Parish, Holbrook will be t= he celebrant.

First Friday Adoration will not be held on March 5^th. Instead, Adoration will move to March 9^th and will couple with a program sponsored by STAND to be held in the Auditorium. Famil= y and friends are welcome!

A Lenten Pare= nt Prayer Evening is being planned for Wednesday, March 24^th to begin at

7 p.m. in the Auditorium.   This will include Adoration,= songs by our choir, and prayer circles with parents.

The Drama Department presents

Les Miserables (Depicts Human Journey from Sorrow to Hope)

Featuring student actors f= rom 20 towns, Cardinal Spellman High Schoo= l’s theatrical production of Les Miserables depicts= human tragedy—from war and poverty to death and unrequited love. Directed by Robert J. McEwan and Dorrie Bessette, Alain Boublil and Claud-Michel Schonberg’s revolutionary musical is based on Victor Hugo’s nov= el.

Over 100 voices strong, the cast holds its own with a gorgeous musical score and vocal talents which rival those of Broadway tour= s.

The dramatic saga began in 1815 D= igne, with the parole-release of prisoner Jean Valjean (brilliantly played by Daniel Whelan of Abington), who spent almost 20 year= s in custody for the crime of stealing bread for his sister’s child. While= Valjean initially embraced freedom and the return of = his independence, he soon realized that his prisoner status was cause for preju= dice and later violates parole.. With the mercy of the local bishop, aptly played by Nick O’Malley of = Randolph, Valjean<= /span> was excused from a new theft and cautioned to embrace honesty in his new li= fe.

The tale ensues when a dying mother, Fantine, (played by Jessica Molinari of Bridgewater) entrusts her child Cosette<= /span> to Valjean’s care. Young Cose= tte (played by Leoni Hoyo of Bridgewater) deli= vers a delightful rendition of “Castle on a Cloud”.

The crass and comical innkeepers = Thernadier and Madame Thenardier were played to perfection= by Dan Higgins of Rockland and Rachel Llanes of Bridgewater whose “Master of the House” was bril= liant.

The quest is on and the battle of good versus evil is = up for interpretation as the relentless Javert (played= by the talented Colin Sullivan of Brockton) pursues Valjean and even consults God above for divine guidance in a powerful and soul-stirring rendition of    “Stars”. <= /p>

The defiant echoes of the telltale showstopper “= Do you hear the people sing?” surrounds the audience with powerful ensemble glory and a wonderful 3-D effect of the students marching up all four aisle= s to encompass viewers in the angst and spirit of the French Revolution.

Cosette grows into a poise= d young lady (played by Leah Carratazzola of Bridgewater) and delivers a charming rendition of “In My Life”. Streetwise waif Eponine (played by Sarah Comeau of Rockland) rivals for the affections of Marius, who chooses Cosette and breaks Eponine’s heart. Comeau= 217;s powerful “On My Own” draws the audience into the plight of the loved and rejected.

“A Heart Full of Love” is a gorgeous rendi= tion of the love song which dramatizes the love triangle of Cosette, Eponine and Marius (played by Matt Stickney of = Bridgewater). Stickney’s charming tenor and compassion for the plight of Eponine and Cosette sweep= s the audience into the human quest for love and acceptance.

Spry and spirited Gavroche= (played by spirited freshman TJ Wells of Abington) shares a terrific “Little People” number about his minute but powerful influence on the revolutionary effort and brought comic relief to the tale.

Whelan’s beautifully-delivered “Bring Him Home” draws the audience into his earnest prayer of “Bring him peace, bring him joy/ he is young/he is only a boy”, as Marius is sent off to battle.

The parade of factory workers, “lovely ladies= 221;, convicts, peasants, sailors, beggars, students, and guards throughout the production was testament to capable direction and visionary theatre, from costumes and lighting to choreography and sound. Audience members will leave the theatre with lingering themes of love, justice, hope, sacrifice, and strength as the ensemble delivery of “One Day More” leaves them wishing for one more song.

The Senior Class presents …

… = the first annual Mr. Spellman contest. The competition= will be on Friday, March 26, and it will be based on categories ranging from tal= ent and personality to formal wear. Boys in all grades are eligible to compete.
