"Spellman (6-0) withstood a late Fenwick (5-1) drive in the waning minutes of regulation as a Crusaders 33-yard field goal attempt came up short.
Fenwick took possession to start the extra frame, but David Cifuentes, who totaled three touchdowns including the game-tying score on a 10-yard third-quarter run, was knocked backward on fourth-and-goal from the Spellman 3.
On its first offensive play of overtime, Spellman quarterback Will McAlpine (6-for-8, 153 yards) hit Shane Foley for a 9-yard gain, but Marrero was stuffed at the goal line on the next snap.
Marrero (18 carries, 71 yards) beckoned to his coaches to get the ball again, and this time he found the end zone to set off a celebration.
“I was telling my coach to give me the ball,” Marrero said. “I wanted it. I was feeling it. I needed it for my team. I felt like I could bring it in and I did.”
