English
The study of English Language and Literature opens a world of possibilities – creatively and imaginatively. It develops essential skills in communication, while simultaneously inspiring change and innovation, encouraging students to inhabit characters and worlds outside of themselves.
At Cardinal Spellman, the English Department takes pride in assisting students on this journey. The department focuses on each individual student's journey to become a more critical reader, a more thoughtful writer, a more compelling rhetorician, and a more effective speaker. We prioritize literary texts that help us understand the world around us and to, in turn, understand ourselves. By focusing on students' awareness of literary voices, we help them find their own.
Four years of English are required with the expectation that the students will be equipped to: (1) comprehend, interpret, and evaluate what they read; (2) write well‐organized, effective papers; (3) listen effectively and discuss ideas intelligently; (4) know our literary heritage and how it relates to the customs, ideas, and values of today’s life and culture; and (5) to study and understand differing literary voices while seeking to discern their own.
