Bring Your Own Apple Device
Please use the following as a guideline when purchasing your students Apple device:
Devices can be purchased at any location of your choice, but we strongly recommend purchasing an insurance policy/warranty, as it will be the responsibility of the purchaser to repair and replace if the device is damaged.
What is an acceptable device for BYO Apple?
1st Choice is Apple iPad: For management, security, and equivalent classroom experiences, iPads must be able to support iOS 13.0 or newer. iPads must also have at least 32GB of storage. Due to security and capacity, older iPad devices unable to support iOS 13.0 and subsequent updates will not be supported at school.
2nd Choice is Apple MacBook (Air or Pro): The device must be able to support OSX 10.14 (Mojave) or above. Minimum RAM for a MacBook is 4GB however 8GB or more is highly recommended. Your MacBook should have at least 32 GB of free storage space available.
When do you need to purchase your device by?
It is recommended that you have your device by July 15th (July 1st for AP classes) in order to have enough time to set up the device and download your textbooks.
Do I need a new Apple ID?
If you already have your an Apple ID, you may use that same ID on your school device. If you do not already have an Apple ID you will need to create one in order to download the necessary APPS.
How do I access my school email account/Google Suite?
Using the credentials provided, go to: Setting→ Mail→ Google→ Sign In. Then, enter the email address and password that you have been assigned to establish your Spellman email on your device.
What APPS do I need to download?
Go to the APP store icon on your device and you can search each of the APPs listed below. Once you have downloaded all of the APPS onto your iPad, log into Google Drive. Use your same Spellman username and password that you used to login to your email.
1.Google Drive
2.Good Docs
3.Google Sheets
4.Google Slides
5.Google Classroom
6.Google Hangout
7.Google Chrome
Book Ordering
Textbooks will be available to purchase on July 6. To download your books you will need to use Google Chrome, which you should have downloaded from the APP store. Go to www.spellman.com. Then click on the ‘PARENTS’ tab at the top of the page, from there click ‘Book Ordering Information’. There you will see a maroon icon titled ‘ONLINE BOOKSTORE’. Follow the websites prompts to select your student’s courses and checkout. Please note there are generally 3 types of books you will see:
1)TEXT = regular physical book – mailed to the address given upon checkout.
2)DIGITAL-iBook = iBook which can be downloaded instantly after purchase. Please note at the end of the checkout process it will ask you for your students Spellman email since they are the ones who get access to the iBook. The codes to get the iBook will go to the student not the parent.
3)DIGITAL- New = E-Book which is controlled by the teacher and publisher. You will get a confirmation email but no code. The bookstore sends the purchase to the publisher and once they get payment they inform the Spellman Department Chair / Teacher who then sends the codes to the student for their book. Please note this process takes 2 to 4 business days.
*There is a $2.00 surcharge for each book ordered in the online bookstore. You can get your books without surcharge on the iBook’s Store (works like APP Store). You will just want to be sure the ISBN number is the same as the book listed in the online bookstore.
**Recommendation: Go through the Online Bookstore for one-stop shopping without a chance of mistaken purchase.
