Performing Arts Department

Welcome to the Performing Arts Department at Cardinal Spellman High School!

At Cardinal Spellman, the performing arts are central to fostering creativity, confidence, and collaboration. While attracting some of the most talented young people south of Boston, our program offers something for everyone.

Whether you're a seasoned performer or stepping onstage for the first time, our inclusive program invites students from all walks of life to explore their artistic passions and contribute to the rich tapestry of our school community.

Our Program

While our program is well known for executing professional-quality performances, it prides itself on bringing together students from all areas of school life including athletes, scholars, and club members alike for productions that unite our community. We meet students where they are, welcoming those without stage experience for roles that foster growth and collaboration.

Overview

Our Performing Arts Department offers a variety of curricular and co-curricular opportunities, with something for everyone, including:

History

As we reflect on 65 years of Cardinal Spellman's history, we are grateful for the countless people, productions, and performances that have shaped our vibrant performing arts program. The legacy of our drama and music programs has enriched not only our students but the entire Spellman community.

The tradition began in 1963 with our first production, The King and I, under the direction of Robert McEwan, who established a culture of excellence in theater that endures today. Following in his footsteps, Janet Madigan, Dorrie Bessette, and Paul Kelly have each left their mark, continuing McEwan's legacy and upholding the high standards he set. Together, they brought challenging productions to life, nurtured student potential, and helped make the performing arts at Spellman a defining part of the student experience.
