House System

“This experience has been an opportunity for me and my peers and of other grades to engage and be more "connected", truly embracing the "Spellman Experience" and "Spellman family". I've especially gotten along with the other mentor leaders who I probably would not have ever met officially if not for the house system.”
What is a House System?
The House System is an alternative form of student governance designed as a community-building model of student life. Its goal is to strengthen connection across all four grade levels. Rather than separating students, it intentionally brings them together into five Houses, each made up of more than 100 students from all grades 9 through 12, creating smaller, more personal communities within our larger school family. Each House is further broken down into mentor groups, guided by faculty mentors and student leaders, fostering meaningful relationships, mentorship, and leadership development.
Each House is named after a Catholic saint whose life reflects leadership, service, and faith, deepening our students’ connection to our Catholic identity and the legacy of the Sisters of Saint Joseph who shaped Spellman from the beginning. Every House has its own crest and colors, proudly represented on t-shirts and flags, while the unifying message remains at the heart of the system: “5 Houses, 1 Home.”
Through shared academic, athletic, service, and social experiences, the House System encourages collaboration, school spirit, and a strong sense of belonging that extends beyond grade levels. Friendly competition adds energy and joy, but never at the expense of unity, our students remain part of one Spellman family. Initiatives like House points simply celebrate participation, with all support ultimately benefiting the school as a whole.
