Dress Code 2024 - 2025

Cardinal Spellman High School has established a dress code and uniform policy for all students. The school dress code reflects and promotes a formal, business-like atmosphere, which is free of distraction and conducive to learning. Parents must help in supporting all policies of the school, including the dress code and uniform policies, by ensuring students are dressed appropriately, according to the dress code. Students are expected to use good judgement and follow the guidelines established in the Student Handbook concerning proper attire for school and school functions. Students must demonstrate good hygiene and wear clothing that is suitable for attending class or a particular school activity or function, and that does not denigrate others or promote illegal, violent, or inappropriate sexual activity.

Students with a uniform violation or found to be not in compliance with the dress code policy will be sent to the office, receive a detention, and may not return to class until they are in the proper uniform. Parents will be called to bring the appropriate clothing or students will be sent home to change before returning to school. If a parent cannot be reached, students may be furnished with uniform attire from the school's uniform closet.

On "dress down" days, students must comply with the conditions set forth in terms of acceptable attire. Any student found not in compliance will be sent to the office and a parent will be called to provide appropriate attire. All uniform clothing and accessories can be purchased through Donnelly's Clothing or School Uniforms by Tommy Hilfiger except for the black 1/4 zip sweatshirt with the Spellman Shield, which can be purchased through the Spellman School Store

DRESS CODE FOR YOUNG MEN:

• PANTS SHORTS AND BELTS
  • Traditional "docker"-style khaki pants; they must be purchased from Donnelly's Clothing, Tommy Hilfiger, or elsewhere. Any other style of pant is not allowed
  • Khaki shorts may be work throughout the year
• SHIRTS
  • Donnelly's or Hilfiger monogrammed long or short-sleeved maroon or white polo shirts (a plain white tee shirt, short or long sleeve, may be worn under the polo).
  • White oxford monogrammed button-down shirt (long-sleeve or short-sleeve)
• SOCKS AND SHOES
  • Neutral-colored crew socks are required
  • Shoes: Neutral, solid-colored shoes - black, brown, beige. All white and all black sneakers
• OUTERWEAR
  • 1/4 zip black Spellman Logo Sweatshirt, from school store
  • Hats are not allowed

NOTE: If a student opts for a more formal attire, dress shirts, and Spellman ties are permitted.

 

DRESS CODE FOR YOUNG WOMEN:

• SKIRTS, SKORTS, SHORTS, PANTS, TIGHTS AND SOCKS
  • Regulation skirts and skorts:
    • Donnelly's Skirt Only (no skort option) - HerringBone print
    • Tommy Hilfiger - Khaki A-line side button (skort or skirt)
      • NOTE: IF the skirt is too short, students will be required to purchase a new, appropriate length skirt or to wear the uniform pants
  • Other optional bottoms:
    • Uniform khaki pants may be worn instead of the skirt. No other style of pants are acceptable
    • Regulation uniform khaki shorts may be worn throughout the year
  • Socks or Tights must be worn with skirt or skort: white, maroon or navy only, and must meet uniform regulations. Tights or black leggings are to be free of holes, rips, runs, or flares. If they are deemed unacceptable, the student will be sent to the office and given a new pair by the Main Office for payment on the following school day
• SHIRTS
  • Hilfiger or Donnelly's monogrammed long or short-sleeved maroon or white polo shirts (a plain white tee shirt, short or long sleeve, may be worn under the polo)
• SHOES
  • Neutral, solid-colored shoes - black, brown, beige Dress shoes are allowed ; no heels. All white or all black sneakers

  • Hilfiger - V-Neck long-sleeved sweater or black cardigan
  • Donnelly's - Collegiate Navy Cardigan
  • Hats are not allowed

 

LITURGY DAY DRESS: Spellman requires a Mandatory Formal Uniform on Liturgy Days, which includes...

• Young Ladies
  • Button-down, white Spellman oxford blouse along with any other permitted skirt, skort, pant, socks, shoes and outerwear
• Young Men
  • Spellman Tie
  • Button-down, white Spellman oxford shirt along with any other permitted pant, socks, shoes and outerwear

NOTE: Senior exception for Liturgy Days, seniors are allowed to wear their specialized ministry t-shirts

 

SPIRIT WEAR FRIDAYS: (except Liturgy Days) students are invited to wear Spellman-wear on top (t-shirts, sweatshirts, ministry shirts, etc.) while adhering to the regular dress code below the waist.

 

RELAXED DRESSED DAYS: Periodically throughout the year, relaxed dress code days may be announced for special occasions. Students may wear jeans, sweatpants, appropriate skirts and shorts, sneakers and non-dress code foot attire. We expect that all student clothing on such days will demonstrate good taste, modesty and respect for all members of the school community. Attire that promotes or advertises tobacco, drug, or alcohol use, sexual activity or discrimination is never acceptable.
