House Browne is named after Sister Claire Browne, CSJ, who served as Spellman’s Principal from 1964-1970. Sister Claire was known for radiant positive energy and her efforts improving the school’s infrastructure, including illuminating the auditorium with a new lighting system. Tied to Spellman’s communication ministry Christ Crew, House Browne’s saint is Archangel Gabriel, God’s messenger.
House Canty is named after Sister Jamesine Canty, CSJ,who served as Spellman’s Principle from 1971-1977. Sister Jamesine was a humble servant and dedicated 67 years of her life to the Sisters of Saint Joseph and educating children of the surrounding Boston area. Dedicated to education and spiritual growth through prayer, House Canty’s saint is St. Ignatius of Loyola. In the spirit of Sister Jamesine's lifelong endeavour of seeking knowledge and lifelong education, we chose a book and tree to represent the perennial quest for wisdom and Truth.
House Canty's charism is Prayer Posse, which organizes and leads our First Friday Adorations, leads our Freshman & Sophomore retreats, and coordinates the freshman midterm gift project.
House Earle is named after Sister Ursula Earle, CSJ, principal from 1977-1985. Sister Ursula was the person who spearheaded our school's NEASC accreditation! She was a strong leader and instrumental in ensuring that the school had all the spaces necessary for student success, both academic and extracurricular. She started fundraisers that would help supplement tuition and was proud to say our school was the most affordable in the region. She was known for her love of God and science and her acknowledgement that "good teachers care, not only about their subject, but their students too."
House Earle's saint is Oscar Romero, defender of the poor and marginalized. Their charism is outreach ministry, which is linked to Lifeguard.
House Ford is named after Sister Vera Ford, CSJ, the founding principal of Spellman. She served as principal from 1958 to 1964. She shaped CSHS from the ground up by securing materials for classrooms, the cafeteria, library, gym, offices, auditorium, and chapel. She created the school’s first academic plan and established enduring traditions such as retreats, school plays, orchestra, and clubs like Glee and the National Honor Society. After her time at Spellman, Sister Vera continued her work in school leadership serving as the principal at several Catholic Schools in MA. Today, House Ford continues her spirit of leadership and service. The senior ministry, God Squad, with a charism centered on liturgical ministry is connected to House Ford. Another house charism is leadership. The house saint is Padre Pio, the patron saint of adolescents and stress relief.
House Knowlton is named after Sister Thomasine Knowlton,CSJ, who served Spellman for 36 years as first a teacher, then Assistant Principal, Principal, and President. She was known for her dedication, integrity, and love of Catholic Education.
House Knowlton's patron saint is Saint Michael the Archangel, protector of those in spiritual danger. He is the patron saint of soldiers and first responders. Our charism is linked to the senior ministry, Holy Heroes, who witnesses to the community through retreats and honors our Veterans at the Veterans Day Prayer Service.
